Population density

Aim of the method/technique Population density is used to describe population concentration
Scale – spatial and temporal It can be calculated from the smaller geographical units (municipality) of the area to higher geographical units (region, nation, etc).  If the territory is divided into smaller areas, useful information can be found on the nature and typology of human settlements, which, for example, can distinguish between urban and rural population density. Likewise another indicator of population density can be useful in characterizing migratory flows by dividing the population into two categories, present population and resident population and extracting the relative population density figures from this data.
Brief description Population density measures population per unit area (number of inhabitants per squared kilometre).
Data requirements Number of inhabitants (expressed in units) and surface area (expressed in km²).
Main applications in cropland , grazing land and forests & shrubland regions ---
Strengths and weaknesses Population density alone is not a sufficient indicator of the relationship between population and natural resources.
