Net migration describes migration in and out of an area. Migration can cause a series of pressures on the local area and, in some case, lead to critical situations.

| Scale – spatial and temporal |
Migratory flow can be calculated on various scales (internationally, nationally, by region, by municipality). Asides net migration, internal migration rates can be compared with external migration rates in order to provide further information on the nature and characteristics of migration. Another useful indicator to better characterize migration is net migration rate, defined as the relationship between net migration and average resident population (ISTAT, Glossary)
