Net migration

This is presented and described using tables, time series graphs and time-series analysis.
Aim of the method/technique Net migration describes migration in and out of an area.  Migration can cause a series of pressures on the local area and, in some case, lead to critical situations.
Scale – spatial and temporal Migratory flow can be calculated on various scales (internationally, nationally, by region, by municipality).  Asides net migration, internal migration rates can be compared with external migration rates in order to provide further information on the nature and characteristics of migration.  Another useful indicator to better characterize migration is net migration rate, defined as the relationship between net migration and average resident population (ISTAT, Glossary)
Brief description Net migration (or migratory flow) is determined by the difference in the number of immigrants and emigrants of an area over a set period of time (ISTAT, Glossary).
Data requirements The data needed to calculate migratory flow are number of immigrant population and number of emigrant population.
