The Zhang Jiachong study site is located in the Changjiang/Pearl River Watershed Rehabilitation Project area in central China. The climate is subtropical monsoon with dry winters and wet summers. Water resources come mainly from surface water but, because of land conditions, pumping and irrigation, most areas are significantly short of water. Red earth is the most widely distributed soil type. With good water supply, productivity is high. Vegetation cover is 25% and most woodland is sparse tree and boscage.

Principal LEDD problems
Destruction of land resources which endangers the survival environment; deterioration of the ecological environment and restriction of agricultural development; sediment in rivers, lakes and reservoirs which endangers the safety of downstream areas; poverty is aggravated and sustainability restricted.

Responses to LEDD
The objective is to control soil loss in order to improve the ecological environment and relieve local poverty, thereby stimulating local social and economic sustainable development. Strategies will include: controlling slopes within small watersheds; developing a unified and comprehensive management planning; integrating control and exploration. Systems for soil and water conservation and demonstration examples will be developed.
